City Councilmember Shaun Abreu has represented District 7 since 2022, when he became the first Latino to represent his upper Manhattan district. Born and raised in Manhattan, Abreu served as a tenant rights lawyer and was a deputy campaign manager for Mark Levine’s successful City Council race.
As a Councilmember, Abreu is a member of the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus. He is a sitting member of the Committee on Mental Health, Disabilities, and Addiction; the Committee on Criminal Justice; the Committee on Consumer and Worker Protection; the Committee on Land Use; the Committee on Housing and Buildings; and the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises. He is the Chair of the Committee on Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, and has spearheaded efforts with the Department of Sanitation to introduce rodent-proof garbage cans, improve garbage collection, and combat rat infestation.
He previously worked at the New York Legal Assistance Group, the National Labor Review Board, and the Natural Resource Defense Council.
